What is an Endometrial Ablation?

This is a course of treatment for Menorrhagia. During an Endometrial Ablation, the lining of the uterus is destroyed or removed. The procedure is is 20-30 minutes in length. The end result typically is lighter periods or they stop altogether. Techniques include:

• Electrocautery – uses a device known as a roller-ball or wire loop to remove the lining with an electric current that generates heat to cauterize the uterus.
• Balloon endometrial ablation – a triangular balloon is inserted in the uterus and filled with fluid, which is then heated for several minutes, causing the destruction of the uterus lining.
• Freezing – The uterus lining is frozen off.
• MEA – Microwave energy to destroy the uterine lining
• Endometrial Ablation is typically done with a hysteroscope.

Since the lining of the uterus is destroyed, women who desire to keep their fertility should seriously consider whether or not to have an Endometrial Ablation.

The right treatment for you depends on what causes your Menorrhagia, which is why getting properly diagnosed is extremely important.
